The story of the imogene + willie brand started way back as a seed of friendship between founders and now husband & wife, Matt and Carrie Eddmenson, when they first met as schoolyard buddies in Kentucky in the United States. Later on, they became coworkers at Carrie’s family business in denim manufacturing. When the company closed down, they still continued in their passion for denim and they set up shop by Granny White Pike in Nashville, Tennessee. In 2009, the old gas service station became their production facility, retail store and think tank for the brand. imogene + willie takes pride in using selvage fabrics or raw dry denim threads made exclusively for them by the vintage shuttle looms of North Carolina, alternatively revered as Cone Denim.

The name imogene + willie is an ode and a token of deep appreciation to Willie & Imogene, Leo & Sally, Anthony & Hazel and James H. & Gladys, who are their paternal and maternal grandparents. The brand, work culture and company signifies Matt and Carrie’s rich loving relationships with all of their grandparents. It represents the life lessons they have picked up and continue to learn from them, together with abundant memories and experiences they forever cherish.

“Ijin” is an antique Japanese word once used to define someone as an outsider, stranger, foreigner, black sheep, alien or sometimes hero.

St. Martins, London alumnus, Philip Goss is the founder and creative director of Ijin Material. Established in 2003, this original and independent artisan denim label is based in a workshop in Italy. 3 years back, Philip Goss was the Creative Director of Evisu and took the brand on to a global platform. Interestingly enough, he earned the affectionate moniker “henna ijin” or “crazy foreigner” from Evisu founder, Yamane-san.

Ijin Material‘s philosophy follows the On Ko Chi Shin principle which means to respect the past in order to create the new or examine and learn that of the past and create new knowledge, experiences and opinion thereafter. The individualism of Ijin Material is trademarked by its signature paper chain “half man” logo representing the symmetry of folding techniques in their products. By respecting traditions, the brand creates new and innovative ways and designs using top quality vintage raw Japanese selvedge denim shuttle loom fabrics, well crafted artisanal Italian “slow-denim” production and Philip Goss’ unique approach to style and modernity.

3 principal cutting techniques make Ijin Material distinct from other jeans in the market today. The Foldedge-Cut leg cuts the garment in an open legged manner and centered on the stronger warp thread. This way the legs collapse naturally around the knee when worn from dry. It becomes a personal body map where the natural aging process or seasoning happens for the denim.

The 2nd technique is the Wrapleg-Cut which cuts the cloth with a straight and folded outer leg in one piece. They have a clean finish hem & inseam and a subtle outseam. A hip dart forms the yoke and shapes across the back of the garment.

Finally, the Artisan-Cut is an homage to a long tradition of selvedge denim craftsmanship. A low tension old loom is used such as to wear it from dry and obtain an authentic imprint on the body for as long as possible. Vintage details are enhanced with extra wide selvedge or the Ijin diamond head sewn rivets or even the trademark Ijin Sixth pocket.

The Quality Mending Company, located on Prince Street in New York, is a brick and mortar store where you can find vintage clothing, antiques, props and new accessories. The shop was founded by Oliver Harkness. When he arrived from London in 1989, he opened a vintage outlet on Ludlow Street. After that he launched the Eleven shop on Prince Street which became one the city’s sought after vintage clothing provider. Canvas bags, head gear, footwear, leather accessories were a hit. Fairly recently the name Eleven changed to The Quality Mending Co.

Currently, the shop carries raw selvedge denim jeans with the “The Highrider” as their initial pair. The shape is modeled after the 1960s Levi’s 505 jeans. It has a 14oz sanforized non-shrink dry denim from Cone Mills, threads from North Carolina, solid copper rivets from Kentucky, pockets from deadstock WWII Swiss army bed linens and assembled on Union Special & Singer industrial machines. These jeans are proudly American made.

Launched in 2004 by Anton Juul, Mikkel Gronnebaek and Tobia Sloth, Norse Projects is a menswear brand mixing elements of streetwear and work wear then refining them into a Scandinavian inspired high quality product. Norse Projects is known for its simple and classic designs with basic workwear functionalities. The label is influenced by the Scandinavian environment but injected with that cool street culture edge. Since its inaugural full collection launched in 2009, Norse Projects has expanded to notable retail stores in the United States, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Australia and Europe.

Swagger is a clothing line in Japan launched in 1999 by Japanese rappers Big-O and Iggy. Swagger is known for its high end approach to streetwear. The brand is inspired by the New York City culture, urban artists youth lifestyle and Japan’s rich heritage towards quality and detail.

The first flagship store opened in 2002 in Ebisu, Tokyo. The second one opened in 2007 in Harajuku.
