It may initially sound like an infant formula but UNIQLO is one of Japan’s leading clothing retail chain around. The brand’s success in Japan paved way for international expansion in Asia, Americas and Europe.

UNIQLO is a primary subsidiary of Fast Retailing Co., Ltd., a Japanese retail holding company which owns brands such as ASPESI, Comptoir des Cotonniers, Foot Park, National Standard and is affiliated with American-Japanese clothing brand Theory.

Since 1949, a chain of men’s clothing shops called Men’s Shop Ogori Shoji propagated in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. By June 1984, a unisex casual wear store opened in Fukuro-machi, Naka-ku, Hiroshima, Japan under the name “Unique Clothing Warehouse”. To shorten the title, the company came up with UNIQLO as an acronym for “Unique Clothing”. In 1991, they changed the company name from Ogori Shoji to Fast Retailing.

The 1998 fleece campaign boosted UNIQLO across Japan. Since then the company has adapted to dynamic economic scenarios and managed to open stores outside Japan. The first set of global flagship stores opened in New York’s SOHO in 2006 and London’s Oxford in 2007. The global R&D systems in New York and Tokyo continue to capture fashion trends that affect consumer lifestyles.

Today, UNIQLO‘s philosophy extends to clothing as lifestyle components. The brand does not dictate a total lifestyle. Instead, UNIQLO‘s apparel are items that the individual chooses to express a personal lifestyle that’s exciting and enjoyable. This is called Component Wear which features infinite combinations matching an individual’s lifestyle.

You have seen it on a trenchcoat, purse, umbrella or scarf. Its distinctive trademark pattern is among the most recognized luxury brands and cultural icons in the world today. Yet, it’s also one of the most widely counterfeited labels around.

In 1856, Thomas Burberry, a former draper’s apprentice, founded and opened his first store in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. Initially, the store focused on outdoors attire. By 1880, Thomas Burberry had invented a tearproof water resistant yet breathable fabric called gabardine. In 1901, the Burberry Equestrian Knight Logo was designed containing the Latin word “Prorsum”, meaning forwards. Queen Elizabeth II and the Prince of Wales granted the company the Royal Warrants of Appointment to recognize that Burberry is an official supplier to the royal family. Around the 1950s, the Burberry brand was bought by a United Kingdom based firm called Great Universal Stores, which has now split its company into Home Retail Group and Experian.

The Burberry classic check or Haymarket check, with the black, white and red pattern tartan, was initially used as a trenchcoat lining. After that the Burberry check started showing up in umbrellas, scarves and luggage. A more exploded, bigger and slanted diamond mitre pattern, called the Novacheck, catered to the younger market. Fairly recently in 2006, an even more exploded version of the Novacheck called Housecheck debuted during a runway show.

Phat Farm is a division of Phat Fashions led by hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons. He is the former executive behind Def Jam Recordings which is now a division of Universal Music Group and founder of the HBO TV series Def Poetry Jam.

Since Phat Farm‘s inception in 1992, the brand has remained true to its essence by combining urban street aesthetics with Ivy League preppy culture. Together with his wife, Kimora Lee Simmons, they have expanded into women’s apparel, Baby Phat, and children’s clothing, Phat Farm Kids. Less is more. Atelier LaDurance is a minimalist. The company is a small independent French denim label. Their concept is not influenced so much by lavish marketing hype. Plus, their modest platform focuses on building direct personal relationships with their shops. On the other hand, France’s Atelier LaDurance is into the details. Their passion is not on quantity but quality. Their top notch Japanese denim is proof. The jeans style should be supported with durable materials. The artistry on the threads should express pure emotion and charm.

Atelier LaDurance jeans offers unwashed denim products only which was a tradition in the past for utility wear. Unwashed denim is sturdy.
