There may be a lot of Joes in the world. The average middle or working class American can be the Ordinary Joe, Joe Sixpack for males or even Average Jane for females. John Doe can be a placeholder for a male whose true identity is unknown or must be withheld for legal reasons. We have Joe the Plumber who is actually a real person and was given this moniker during the 2008 U.S. presidential election. In everyday life, a cup of Joe means a cup of brewed coffee. In Japan, Jōe, meaning “pure cloth”, is a garment worn by priests attending religious ceremonies and activities, including but not limited to Buddhist and Shinto related occasions.
