Born in Elmira, New York, Tommy Hilfiger‘s career in fashion started in high school back in 1969 when he opened a small chain of stores called People’s Place. He began designing for several boutiques and decided to pursue a career as a full time fashion designer in New York City. With Mohan Murjani’s business support, he launched his first signature collection in 1985 with a youthful relaxed appeal, modern button-down shirts and updated designs of classics.

Tommy Hilfiger has also collaborated with legendary ad man George Lois in developing influential ad campaigns and media such as the “hangman ad” and the Iconic America: A Roller-Coaster Ride through the Eye-Popping Panorama of American Pop Culture book. In the 1990s, Tommy Hilfiger began featuring emerging talent such as Britney Spears and Lenny Kravitz in his ads. In 2009, the company launched Hilfiger Denim blending quality denim jeans, modern designs and the dynamic music industry. In 2010, Phillips-Van Heusen, owner of Calvin Klein, bought the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation.

For 25 years, the brand has brought classic yet modern American apparel all over the world. Under his guidance, the Tommy Hilfiger Group has become one of very few globally recognized designer brands offering a wide range of American-inspired apparel and accessories.

At first waste(twice) sounds like a word from a Santa holiday song or an eco-trendy catch word for a green future. This Japanese clothing brand, by Pranskter Associates, is designed by Motoki Kawanabe and Shinsuke Kojima in Tokyo.

waste(twice)‘s style is a hybrid. Think of Scottish Highlands, United States Everglades, vagabonds in the past, London streetwear, classic tweeds, Tokyo fashion, roaring 1920s and modern designs all rolled into one. From Arts & Realism, Modern Gypsy, Frontier Sunday, The SkagitRiver Hotel to North Sea Heroes, waste(twice)‘s core relies on nature and the spirit of adventure. Their newest fashion line is called Voyage which takes the outdoors to the next level.

After scoping around for a good second hand traditional British men’s clothing at Portobello Road in West London in 1979, Jeremy Hackett and Ashley Lloyd-Jennings partnered up selling well refurbished apparel. The first shop was named “Hackett” located at the New Kings Road in Parson’s Green, London.

The early 1980s brought Hackett to cult status as advocated by “Young Fogeydom” and the “Sloane Ranger handbook”. As they began manufacturing new clothes to complement their second hand apparel, Hackett attracted the high end Savile Row patrons. In the late 1980s, Hackett expanded its presence in Europe, particularly in Spain.

The 90s decade brought Alfred Dunhill’s influence which allowed Hackett to open its flagship store in Sloane Street, London SW1. Further on, Hackett began producing children’s clothes dubbed as “Essential British Kids”.

The millennium until today has enabled Hackett to delve into more athletic participation and sports sponsorships. As it grows, the list has presented Guards Polo Club, Goodwood Festival of Speed, England Rugby team, GT1 works Aston Martin Racing team, London Rowing Club, the British Army Polo Team, Rundle Cup, Lotus Racing, Santa Maria Polo Club in Spain, The London Rowing Club, Klosters Snow Polo, The Boat Race and Elephant Polo in India.

Hackett is indeed a classic men’s British style but not old fashioned. The design philosophy is more evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The modern touch makes its style sustainable.

The order of large reptiles, called Crocodilia or Crocodylia, appeared in the late Cretaceous Period, which is about 84 million years ago after the Jurassic period. The alligator, crocodile, gharial or Indian gavial and caiman families are part of the crocodilian group of species. These reptiles are known to be monstrous and ferocious especially its teeth, jaws and predatory skills.

As fierce as a crocodilian, Rene Lacoste was nicknamed “the Alligator” by the American press initially due to an alligator skin suitcase bet with the Captain of the French Davis Cup back in 1927. But more importantly, the public recognized how Rene Lacoste always displayed his tenacity on the tennis courts. Frenchman Rene Lacoste was among “The Musketeers” who stole the Davis Cup away from the Americans in 1927. Among his many achievements include three French Open victories (1925, 1927 and 1929), two Wimbledon championships (1925 and 1928) and two U.S. Open titles (1926 and 1927).

In 1933, together with Andre Gillier, Rene Lacoste founded La Chemise Lacoste producing sportswear tennis shirts with the crocodile logo on the chest. In 1963, Rene’s son Bernard Lacoste took over and expanded the company internationally including the United States. The Lacoste brand exploded into fame in the 1970-1980s as it became one of the essential preppy wardrobes to covet. In this period up until 1993, Izod and Lacoste collaborated together to produce the Izod Lacoste apparel brand. Izod was then sold to Van Heusen.

With Lacoste’s popularity surging through the times, the company has also encountered disputes and guerilla competition with its image and branding. Hong Kong apparel brand Crocodile Garments had troubles with the crocodile logo. The infamous and satirical Croc O’Shirt shook up the fad. Le Tigre Clothing sprung up to compete with Lacoste in the U.S. market.

Today, Lacoste operates in numerous boutiques and department stores worldwide. In 2008, the Lacoste brand celebrated its 75th anniversary with Christopher Chenut as CEO and Michel Lacoste as President.

The L.L.Bean Flagship Store in Freeport, Maine, U.S.A. has a giant Bean Boot in front of the store. That might be something King Kong or Godzilla would wear in the outdoors.

Hunter and outdoorsman, Leon Leonwood (L.L.) Bean is the man behind the L.L.Bean enterprise. In 1911, after a drenching experience from a hunting trip from the Maine woods, Leon Leonwood Bean came up with an idea to create a comfortable yet functional shoe by stitching leather uppers to workmen’s rubber boots. This innovation called the Maine Hunting Shoe changed the reality of outdoor footwear and started one of many successful family run businesses in the country.

The enterprise began from a basement of the family’s apparel shop. The business mantra that captured the public’s enthusiasm was:

Today, the company is lead by L.L.Bean‘s grandson, Leon Gorman, and current CEO Christopher McCormick.
