The Spanish word “bebe” has two meanings. With an accent on the last “e”, it means baby. Without the accent, it means to drink.

But in our case, bebe is pronounced “bee-bee” and is an American clothing retailer and contemporary women’s apparel & accessories company founded by Manny Mashouf in 1976 in San Francisco, California. The “To be or not to be” opening line of a soliloquy from William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, inspired the company name. Today, bebe has expanded with more than 300 stores worldwide. Levi’s is one of the most famous denim jeans brands in history and in the world. In 1853, Bavarian born immigrant, Levi Strauss, set up a small dry goods store selling clothing, blankets, handkerchiefs, etc in San Francisco. The business grew and prospered through the years.

In 1872-73, a Reno, Nevada tailor, Jacob Davis collaborated with Levi Strauss to use New Hampshire’s Amoskeag Mill denim and produce his newly invented process of using copper rivets in waist overalls and pants.

In 1886, the Two Horse brand leather patch was first used on the waist overalls. This symbolized strength of the pants and recognition as an originator of patent riveted clothing.

Today, American icon Levi’s continues to clothe the world. Currently, the company operates other brands such as Dockers, Denizen and Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. which are worn by all walks of life. Recently, they introduced Water<Less Jeans and Levi’s Curve ID.

Eddie Bauer is known today not just for its outdoor clothing but also how it integrated its brand in Ford vehicles, car seats, strollers, diaper bags, camping gear, lane furniture and even interior paint. The name Paige is an English surname and a spelling variation of Page. In medieval times, a page was an attendant to a knight. It is from an Old French word meaning “young helper” or an apprentice.

Paige Premium Denim was founded in 2004 by Miss California 1991 and fit model Paige Adams-Geller. In the socio-political arena, the term “Banana Republic” refers to a politically unstable country which relies on limited agricultural resources, such as bananas. The nation is also governed by a dictatorial military junta exploiting large scale plantations. Today, the term is often used to describe a backward dictatorial regime where corruption, extortion and fraud are rampant.

On the other hand, in fashion, it is quite the opposite. Banana Republic is a luxury brand recognized as a sophisticated workwear and modern casual clothing line. The “Banana Republic look” is prevalent among the early 20s young professionals to the mid 30s business executives. In 1978, Mel and Patricia Zeigler founded the original Banana Republic brand. As journalists, Mel and Patricia frequently traveled to different locations and countries.
