Desigual is the Spanish translation for something that is unequal, different, distinct or unlevelled.

Founded in 1984 by Swiss native, Thomas Meyer, Desigual is known for its signature patchwork designs, rich colorful print patterns, dynamic graffiti art designs and vibrant color explosion. From Isabel Coixet’s idea, they chose the name “Desigual” and accompanied it by the slogan of “It’s not the same”.

Based in Barcelona, Spain, the casual clothing brand has been led by Manel Adell since 2002. The key factor for their success is the concept of Fun&Profit. Enjoying work while achieving sustainable growth is the essence. Their core brand values, which are positivism, joy, unconventional spirit, non inhibition, emotion and complicity, make Desigual a unique company and business environment.

Each season, the Desigual design team of 20 creatives, ideates a collection of over 1,000 items which they build around a single unifying concept. They respond to current and upcoming trends while keeping track towards fun, well being and quality of life. In January 2011, Desigual launched a peculiar marketing campaign in Spain, Portugal, London, Berlin, Stockholm, Prague and New York City with the slogan and sales hook of “Come in undressed and go out dressed”.

Today, Desigual employs a crew of 2,800 people of more than 72 nationalities. The company prides itself with 7,000 multibrand stores, 200 Desigual brand stores, 1,700 corners & shop-in-shops all over the world and a global ecommerce website.

Robin Chretien is the founder and designer of Robin’s Jean. Born in Lyon, France, Robin’s creativity and passion comes from his roots, particularly his parents. He ventured overseas and landed in Los Angeles, California in 1996. His talents brought him recognition among denim brands such as Blue Cult and Hudson Jeans. His warrior spirit and a fondness for motorcycles, antique cars and vintage cinema brought forth a dream to launch his own brand. In 2005, He established Robin’s Jean with the signature gold wings which symbolized his childhood dreams of freedom and flight. Robin’s Jean products are sold in approximately 800 specialty stores with major retail partners nationwide and in the international market.

The word “whiz” denotes making a buzzing or hissing sound, in most cases, by flying swiftly through the air. On the other hand, “Cheez Whiz” is a well known bright orange thick processed cheese sauce or spread sold by Kraft Foods usually contained in a glass jar.

In Japanese fashion, Whiz Limited is a streetwear brand known for its concept of individual clothing, design conscious silhouettes and unique Tokyo style outlook. Founder, Hiroaki Shitano, launched his label in Autumn Winter 2000 with “Whiz” as its moniker. Three years later, he added the word “Limited” to its name. What started as handmade printed shirts grew in popularity; thus, expanding Whiz Limited into several lines such as jackets, denim, knitwear and accessories. In 2003, he opened his flagship Harajuku shop Lump Tokyo. The brand also has collaborated with many international labels such as Levi’s, Stussy, Medicom Toy, Disney Marvel, New Era and Adidas with designer Kazuki Kuraishi.

“Ijin” is an antique Japanese word once used to define someone as an outsider, stranger, foreigner, black sheep, alien or sometimes hero.

St. Martins, London alumnus, Philip Goss is the founder and creative director of Ijin Material. Established in 2003, this original and independent artisan denim label is based in a workshop in Italy. 3 years back, Philip Goss was the Creative Director of Evisu and took the brand on to a global platform. Interestingly enough, he earned the affectionate moniker “henna ijin” or “crazy foreigner” from Evisu founder, Yamane-san.

Ijin Material‘s philosophy follows the On Ko Chi Shin principle which means to respect the past in order to create the new or examine and learn that of the past and create new knowledge, experiences and opinion thereafter. The individualism of Ijin Material is trademarked by its signature paper chain “half man” logo representing the symmetry of folding techniques in their products. By respecting traditions, the brand creates new and innovative ways and designs using top quality vintage raw Japanese selvedge denim shuttle loom fabrics, well crafted artisanal Italian “slow-denim” production and Philip Goss’ unique approach to style and modernity.

3 principal cutting techniques make Ijin Material distinct from other jeans in the market today. The Foldedge-Cut leg cuts the garment in an open legged manner and centered on the stronger warp thread. This way the legs collapse naturally around the knee when worn from dry. It becomes a personal body map where the natural aging process or seasoning happens for the denim.

The 2nd technique is the Wrapleg-Cut which cuts the cloth with a straight and folded outer leg in one piece. They have a clean finish hem & inseam and a subtle outseam. A hip dart forms the yoke and shapes across the back of the garment.

Finally, the Artisan-Cut is an homage to a long tradition of selvedge denim craftsmanship. A low tension old loom is used such as to wear it from dry and obtain an authentic imprint on the body for as long as possible. Vintage details are enhanced with extra wide selvedge or the Ijin diamond head sewn rivets or even the trademark Ijin Sixth pocket.

Albert Einstein has E=mc2. The mass–energy equivalence in physics is the concept that the mass of a body is a measure of its energy content. While in the style world, fashion equals DSquared2.

Dean and Dan Caten, Canadian twin brothers from Willowdale, Ontario, moved to New York City in 1983 to attend the Parson’s School of Design. After a short stint, they moved back to Toronto and pursued their first signature womens line, DEanDAN. Through the late 1980s and early 1990s, they managed to work with various designers and brands such as Ports 1961, Gianni Versace and Diesel. Since moving to Italy in 1991, Dean and Dan Caten finally debuted their first menswear collection named “Homesick Canada Collection” in Milan. In 1996, the “Napoli” collection, inspired by the Neapolitan roots of their father, also premiered.

When the new millennium came in, DSquared2, gained prominence and massive media exposure. In 2000, the brand created the wardrobe for Madonna’s video, Don’t Tell Me.
