Desigual is the Spanish translation for something that is unequal, different, distinct or unlevelled.

Founded in 1984 by Swiss native, Thomas Meyer, Desigual is known for its signature patchwork designs, rich colorful print patterns, dynamic graffiti art designs and vibrant color explosion. From Isabel Coixet’s idea, they chose the name “Desigual” and accompanied it by the slogan of “It’s not the same”.

Based in Barcelona, Spain, the casual clothing brand has been led by Manel Adell since 2002. The key factor for their success is the concept of Fun&Profit. Enjoying work while achieving sustainable growth is the essence. Their core brand values, which are positivism, joy, unconventional spirit, non inhibition, emotion and complicity, make Desigual a unique company and business environment.

Each season, the Desigual design team of 20 creatives, ideates a collection of over 1,000 items which they build around a single unifying concept. They respond to current and upcoming trends while keeping track towards fun, well being and quality of life. In January 2011, Desigual launched a peculiar marketing campaign in Spain, Portugal, London, Berlin, Stockholm, Prague and New York City with the slogan and sales hook of “Come in undressed and go out dressed”.

Today, Desigual employs a crew of 2,800 people of more than 72 nationalities. The company prides itself with 7,000 multibrand stores, 200 Desigual brand stores, 1,700 corners & shop-in-shops all over the world and a global ecommerce website.

We’ve heard about Hitchcock’s movie, Vertigo. For kids, the Lego toy series and animated film, Ninjago, is a hit. In fashion and jeanswear, its suffix counterpart comes in the label named Devergo.

Originally founded in Italy back in 1980s, DEVE(R)GO’ initially specialized in tailored suits and menswear. When the Italian denim labels emerged in this era, the company hired some young Italian fashion designers to forge into a new jeans brand. By the end of the 1990s, DEVE(R)GO’ became successful not only in Italy but also in Brazil, Asia and Europe. In 1991, a major restructuring of the firm occurred. The new owner moved the company to Budapest, Hungary as its base in 1998. Today, DEVE(R)GO’ has expanded to Russia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Bulgaria and Poland.

Perhaps one of the most influential pairs in the history of the fashion world is none other than Dolce & Gabbana. Italian designers, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, started the company in 1985 in Milan, Italy with a debut collection at the Milano Collezioni New Talents. In 1989, they held their first women’s fashion show in Tokyo. The following year, the brand featured their first men’s collection. In 1990, Dolce & Gabbana opened their showroom in New York, 532 Broadway. The debut of another major line entitled, D&G Dolce&Gabbana, launched in 1994 as a youthful and contemporary apparel collection. Two years after, the company staged its first fashion show in New York for D&G Dolce&Gabbana. The new millennium brought collaborations with sports teams and famous personalities such as Madonna, introduction of sub-brand collections like D&G Junior, initiation of a new several fragrances & books, openings of international boutiques and flagship stores in major cities around the world.

Dolce & Gabbana has two central lines. Dolce&Gabbana, without spaces, specializes in luxury items. They are more formal and timeless and geared towards long-term trends. On the other hand, D&G, is a more casual line inspired by urban culture, youth movement and hyper trends of the changing seasons. Unfortunately, the D&G sub-brand is discontinued this year 2011.

Overall, Dolce & Gabbana is a luxury brand known for its stylistic originality and superior tailoring. It has been one of the forerunners of fashion utilizing its strong identity, innovation, unconventional designs and powerful Mediterranean flavour of its origins.

Dean and Dan Caten, Canadian twin brothers from Willowdale, Ontario, moved to New York City in 1983 to attend the Parson’s School of Design. After a short stint, they moved back to Toronto and pursued their first signature womens line, DEanDAN. Through the late 1980s and early 1990s, they managed to work with various designers and brands such as Ports 1961, Gianni Versace and Diesel. Since moving to Italy in 1991, Dean and Dan Caten finally debuted their first menswear collection named “Homesick Canada Collection” in Milan. In 1996, the “Napoli” collection, inspired by the Neapolitan roots of their father, also premiered.

When the new millennium came in, DSquared2, gained prominence and massive media exposure. In 2000, the brand created the wardrobe for Madonna’s video, Don’t Tell Me. In 2002, Madonna wore DSquared2 for the cowboy segment of her “Drowned World Tour 2002″ and their womenswear line launched in Milan. The decade saw DSquared2‘s expansion of its media presence through collaborations with well known personalities such as Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, Fergie and Britney Spears. Designers, Dean and Dan Caten, also garnered many awards recognizing their talent and influence. Furthermore, the company also became active in sports and sponsored Turin’s soccer club, Juventus and Barcelona Football Club.

Diet Butcher Slim Skin is a Japanese fashion label based out of Tokyo. Founded in 1997 by Hisashi Fukatami, the brand’s signature style mixes punk rock, such as Jamie Leid, Sex Pistols and The Clash, alternative culture, modern street fashion and innovative tailoring. Diet Butcher Slim Skin‘s designs offer freedom similar to how punk rock shakes the norms. Venom is their Tokyo flagship store in Aobadai Meguro-ku. Metal Burger was also initiated in 2002.
