H&M was established in Västerås, Sweden in 1947 by Erling Persson through their women’s clothing store called Hennes. In 1968, the founder, Erling Persson, bought the hunting/fishing equipment shop and menswear/kids clothing line, Mauritz Widforss. Eventually the company name Hennes (Swedish for “her or hers or women”) was modified to Hennes & Mauritz. Later on, it was abbreviated to H&M.

The 1970s brought H&M‘s listing on the Stockholm Stock Exchange and an international store in London. The 1980s saw shops open in Germany and the Netherlands including the acquisition of a mail order company called Rowells. Further to the 1990s, H&M continued to expand in Europe and massive advertising gained more exposure. The new millenium brought H&M its first US store in New York, several collaborations with famous personalities and designers, an ecommerce expansion and more openings in Asia such as Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo. In 2007, the concept store COS was launched. In 2008, the company acquired the FaBric Scandinavien AB with Weekday, Monki and Cheap Monday brands. By 2011, H&M already launched stores in Russia, Lebanon, South Korea, Israel, Romania and many more. The brand has also expanded into different markets such as home collection, cosmetics, accessories and footwear. H&M carries the &denim jeans among its various jeanswear line.

Scientifically, Indigofera is a large genus of species of flowering plants belonging to the legume family, pea family, bean family or pulse family. The species are mostly shrubs, herbs and small trees. Among the most common types are the Indigofera Tinctoria (true indigo) and Indigofera Suffruticosa (Anil) which are used to produce the indigo dye. The chemical aniline was first synthesized from Indigofera Suffruticosa. The indigo dye is the organic compound that produces the blue slightly purple color. Its primary purpose is to dye a cotton yarn. As such, the denim cloth for blue jeans was born.

Indigofera is not only a plant or color but a fashion brand as well. Based in Sweden, Indigofera Prima Jeans, is headed by Johan Soderlund and Mats Andersson. They have been active in the denim industry for decades and both have decided to carve out their vision of the dream jean. The essence of Indigofera Prima Jeans is about old fashioned quality, detailed craftsmanship and pure love for denim. Garments from the narrow shuttle looms of Japan and authentic indigo dyeing materials from India and Africa are all combined to create a true indigo masterpiece.

The motorcycle culture has been with us since it was first built by German inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in 1885. Since motorcycles are affordable forms of transport, there are around 200 million motorcycles in use worldwide and most of it are found in developing countries of Asia like China and India.

Its popularity in the recent years has increased due to high fuel prices, urban congestion and also media outlets such as the reality show American Chopper. Furthermore, the rise of subcultures contributes to its acceptance and lifestyle preferences. The 1950-60s saw cafe racers, Mods and Rockers in the UK. Harley Davidson and BMW enthusiasts have their organizations too. Other motorcyclist groups are also focused on charity and public assistance. On the other hand, there are the Pagans, Hells Angels, Outlaws MC, and Bandidos who are in conflict with society and the law.

Another subculture has surfaced with the appreciation of motorcycle clothing as a fashionable wardrobe component. A denim brand called Vintage1 is about authentic motorcycle lifestyle that inspires freedom and showcases the rock & roll lifestyle. The designer jeans apparel is edgy and fashion forward yet as essential as everyday clothing. Designer Phillipe Naouri, who has a 20 year solid experience with luxury denim brands such as Replay, Diesel, G-star, Levis, Antik Denim and Chevignon, lends his expertise, craftsmanship and passion for vintage denim into the Vintage1 clothing line.

Marco Polo is one of the great adventurers of the millennia. He became famous for his travels and trading through Asia, particularly in Mongolia, in relation to the Emperor Kublai Khan, and China through the Silk Routes.

From Sweden and Germany to Kazakhstan and Singapore, the Marc O’Polo brand (note the name variation) also has their own fashionable voyage across nations. In 1967, the Swedes Rolf Lind, Gote Huss and an American Jerry O’Sheets started Marc O’Polo in Stockholm. The essence of the brand is the utilization of natural materials like silk, cotton, wool and linen to suit their lifestyle collections. Today, Marc O’Polo is one of the premium casual wear and sportswear brand in Europe.

Marc O’Polo men’s fall-winter 2008 collection exudes the “casual bohemian”. Casual looks include wax coated corduroy jackets with furry collars, lambswool cardigans and dark rinse indigo denim jeans. Jeanswear features Campus Klas, Campus Louis, Eric, Johan, Ole and Regular Fit options. A more formal segment goes for washed wool look for sports jacket and jersey polo shirts in a layered manner.

Marc O’Polo women’s selections show wool/ cashmere pea coats and color sets like chocolate, grey, night blue, military green and mud paired with petrol, saffron, grape, viridian green and moss accents. Denim selections include Campus Asha, Campus Ella, Campus Hannah, Campus Klas, Campus Lova, Lea, Lotta, Margo and Stretch Fit. Meanwhile, the dressed segment offers felted cape coats, knitwear mini dresses and hand knit scarves. Materials used go for heavy wool cloth, flowing silky fabrics and long cardigans of mohair and jersey.

Based in Goteborg, Sweden, Nudie Jeans, a subsidiary of Svenska Jean AB, was founded by Maria Erixsson in 1999. The fashion brand specializes in selvedge, raw and prewashed denim jeans. Together with Acne Jeans, WESC and J. Lindeberg, Nudie Jeans is among the successful and internationally known Swedish brands in the world.

The essence of Nudie Jeans is that it stays true to denim and its character. The fabric ages beautifully like wine. Jeans becomes personal. Denim becomes your second skin. That is “the naked truth about denim”.

Nudie Jeans uses organic denim. Cotton is developed through environmentally sustainable production. Ecological procedures are applied through different processes including spinning, dyeing and yarn finishing.

Men’s jeanswear fit guide features:

Nudie Jeans Average Joe: Straight leg and slimmer leg opening than Regular Alf.

Nudie Jeans Boot Barry: Straight cut, slight bootcut and normal waist.

“Free as a bird, it’s the next best thing to be.” Empower yourself with jeans and set yourself free. In 1995, the highly controversial Beatles single, “Free as a Bird” was released. The song, by John Lennon, was only written and recorded as a demo in 1977. Yoko Ono, together with the remaining Beatles, chose the song in which they could all collaborate in. The song and video carried so much symbolism and meaning that it not only depicted the Beatles’ journey and achievements but also reflected Yoko Ono’s life and character as well.

Denimbirds is Nudie Jeans’ sister brand. It is the creation of Maria Erixon and is geared towards womenswear and jeans. Denimbirds’ essence pays homage to Yoko Ono’s strength, independence and free spirit. There are neither specific trends nor flowery effects to its jeans style. Denimbirds jeans collection is made for all women who appreciate and accept their own unique body structures. Denimbirds jeans does not follow the status quo or the marketing facade that trends dictate.
