One of China’s luxury lifestyle brands with an international presence is Shanghai Tang. Founded in in 1994 by Hong Kong businessman David Tang Wing Cheung, the fashion house is inspired by traditional Han Chinese or Silk Robe clothing. The Chinese luxury brand also leads the Mandarin Collar Society to promote a modern chic element through the use of the mandarin collar as an alternative to the traditional necktie.

Today the brand has expanded to accessories, home ware and lifestyle experiences through lounge music collections and the Shanghai Tang Café that offers a modern Chinese cuisine experience. From a colorful and nostalgic art deco store in Hong Kong, the company has increased its presence into an international network of 40 boutiques in the world’s most prestigious shopping districts, including Shanghai, Singapore, New York, Las Vegas, Moscow, Dubai, Frankfurt, Paris, London and Madrid.

Esprit de corps. L’esprit de l’escalier. The jeans trodden with wit and style. The French phrase, “Esprit de corps”, denotes the common spirit existing in a group inspiring enthusiasm, devotion and honor. Originally a quip by French encyclopedist Diderot, “L’esprit de l’escalier” is the moment when you wished you had made a witty remark sooner but missed the opportunity. Thus it is referred to as “The spirit that passes on the staircase.”

Collectively, the Esprit clothing line, brand and company radiate not only a sense of wit from their trendy styles but also a spirit that transcends fashion towards a commitment to social responsibilities and charity work. The company began in San Francisco, CA in the 1960s by Susie Russell (Susie Tompkins Buell) and Douglas Tompkins. They started selling Esprit clothes out of their station wagon.

In 1971, the company incorporated under the name of Esprit de corp. and partnered up with Michael Ying to create the Esprit Far East Group. In 1979, Esprit obtained a new logo with the triple bar “E” stencil effect, designed by John Casado, which would eventually become one of the most recognized identities in international fashion. Headquartered in Kowloon, Hong Kong and Ratingen, Germany, Esprit expanded to 5 continents and 44 countries with a multitude of product lines to offer through the years. 2008 marks the 40th anniversary of Esprit’s journey and achievements in fashion.

Currently for denim jeanswear, Esprit carries multiple micro brands such as Casual, Collection, De.Corp and EDC.
