It may initially sound like an infant formula but UNIQLO is one of Japan’s leading clothing retail chain around. The brand’s success in Japan paved way for international expansion in Asia, Americas and Europe.
UNIQLO is a primary subsidiary of Fast Retailing Co., Ltd., a Japanese retail holding company which owns brands such as ASPESI, Comptoir des Cotonniers, Foot Park, National Standard and is affiliated with American-Japanese clothing brand Theory.
Since 1949, a chain of men’s clothing shops called Men’s Shop Ogori Shoji propagated in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. By June 1984, a unisex casual wear store opened in Fukuro-machi, Naka-ku, Hiroshima, Japan under the name “Unique Clothing Warehouse”. To shorten the title, the company came up with UNIQLO as an acronym for “Unique Clothing”. In 1991, they changed the company name from Ogori Shoji to Fast Retailing.
The 1998 fleece campaign boosted UNIQLO across Japan. Since then the company has adapted to dynamic economic scenarios and managed to open stores outside Japan. The first set of global flagship stores opened in New York’s SOHO in 2006 and London’s Oxford in 2007. The global R&D systems in New York and Tokyo continue to capture fashion trends that affect consumer lifestyles.
Today, UNIQLO‘s philosophy extends to clothing as lifestyle components. The brand does not dictate a total lifestyle. Instead, UNIQLO‘s apparel are items that the individual chooses to express a personal lifestyle that’s exciting and enjoyable. This is called Component Wear which features infinite combinations matching an individual’s lifestyle.
To complement that principle, UNIQLO‘s standards are also about Japanese quality, Japan’s technology, color variations and culture. Japanese quality is about refinement and attention to detail. Through Japan’s technology, the term Heattech was born. Heattech is warmth and comfort at an affordable price. It is a special fiber that converts body moisture and turns it into heat. The heat generation combines with thermal insulation to create the ideal material for staying warm and comfortable in cold weather. Heattech’s underlying functions are heat generation, soft texture, heat retention, moisture control, odor control and stretchable comfort. On the other hand, color variations feature overwhelming hues and shades to make refreshing combinations for your wardrobe. Finally, mega culture brings forth a creative blend of traditions, pop culture, Japan and the world.
