The L.L.Bean Flagship Store in Freeport, Maine, U.S.A. has a giant Bean Boot in front of the store. That might be something King Kong or Godzilla would wear in the outdoors.
Hunter and outdoorsman, Leon Leonwood (L.L.) Bean is the man behind the L.L.Bean enterprise. In 1911, after a drenching experience from a hunting trip from the Maine woods, Leon Leonwood Bean came up with an idea to create a comfortable yet functional shoe by stitching leather uppers to workmen’s rubber boots. This innovation called the Maine Hunting Shoe changed the reality of outdoor footwear and started one of many successful family run businesses in the country.
The enterprise began from a basement of the family’s apparel shop. The business mantra that captured the public’s enthusiasm was:
“You cannot expect success hunting deer or moose if your feet are not properly dressed. The Maine Hunting Shoe is designed by a hunter who has tramped the Maine woods for the last 18 years. We guarantee them to give perfect satisfaction in every way.”
Although the first batch of boots were a dud, L.L.Bean countered the setback with a guaranteed refund, correction of the problem, extensive product testing, honest to goodness advertising and ultimate customer satisfaction. L.L.Bean gradually established itself as a trusted and reliable source for outdoor gear, equipment and expert sporting advice.
Today, the company is lead by L.L.Bean‘s grandson, Leon Gorman, and current CEO Christopher McCormick. Aside from footwear, the company has branched out with a full line of clothing, backpacks, tents and commercial partnerships like automotive manufacturer Subaru from 2000-2008. Along with retail, factory outlets around the United States, L.L.Bean has also expanded internationally such as Japan and China.
