The All-Seeing Eye, composed of a single human eye with beams of light, is a universal symbol of the Supreme Being’s protection and guidance. On the other hand, the Evil Eye is a look causing injury or bad luck on the person at whom it is directed. It is also considered a sickness transmitted unintentionally or intentionally by someone who is jealous or envious.
In many cultures, regions and eras where the Evil Eye belief occurs, the All-Seeing Eye, commonly in a reflective eye charm form, is one of many apotropaic talismans used to ward off this type of danger or evil. In Turkish culture, the Nazar (Nazar Boncugu or Nazar Boncuk or evil eye stone) is a protective amulet against the Evil Eye. The talisman is usually made of colored glass with concentric circles or droplet shapes. The color spread from the outside to the center shows dark blue or black then white then light blue or yellow and finally dark blue at the center. The blue glass eye charm mirrors back the blue of the evil eye and confounds its influence.
The Nazar is utilized as a fashionable avatar by Mavi Jeans. Founded in Istanbul, Turkey in 1991, Mavi Jeans is its nation’s first fashion brand to hit international fame. Mavi Jeans is sold in over 50 countries worldwide. The designer denim jeans brand is known for its fashion forward styles and exotic Mediterranean feel, aptly coined “Maviterranean” by fashionistas. Together with designer Rifat Ozbek, Mavi introduced a special line of organic denim with a Mediterranean influence. Mavi, which means blue in Turkish, is also recognized for its great quality and fit. In 2006, Time Magazine included Mavi Jeans in the top 16 best jeans brand in the world.
